Republican lawmakers react to Boehner’s retirement
“To that end, I will resign the speakership and my seat in Congress on October. 30”.

Some tea partyers were pushing for a vote to oust Boehner as speaker, a formal challenge that hasn’t happened in more than 100 years. Boehner has long faced intense pressure from his conservative colleagues to take more of an ideologically purist stance on divisive issues like Obamacare and the Export-Import Bank.
“Listen, I play golf, I ride a bike, I cut my own grass, my mother is dark-complected, so I’m a little dark”, he told Jay Leno past year. “I believe, if he wants to do it, he will have the support to be the next speaker”, he told the Bakersfield Californian.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones, a Republican who flirted in the past with challenging Boehner, said he was getting phone calls from potential supporters.
During his press conference Friday afternoon, Boehner effectively endorsed McCarthy.
“We told him we were disappointed, frustrated and angry”, Mulvaney said.
Boehner said he came to his decision Friday morning, a day after a historic visit to the Capitol by Pope Francis at his invitation.
“Just yesterday we witnessed the awesome sight of Pope Francis addressing the greatest legislative body in the world and I hope that we will all heed his call to live by the golden rule”.
“Who am I to pray for the pope?”
Many of these members on the right of the House GOP conference used their threat to topple Boehner as leverage against passing a continuing resolution that didn’t defund Planned Parenthood. “He realizes that there come times when you have to make a deal”, McConnell said, before pointing out that Reagan also “understood the art of compromise”. “A true champion knows when it’s time to walk away”, Law said. “I think to the average Ohioan and the average person watching, I mean, this should raise a red flag”. A majority vote of 218 is necessary to elect a speaker, so Republicans can not afford to have more than a couple of dozen dissenters. Invited Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address USA lawmakers in March about his opposition to President Barack Obama’s emerging nuclear agreement with Iran without consulting the White House or Democratic leaders. “But you have to work with people who you disagree with, and sometimes strongly, in order to do the people’s business”.
Boehner’s decision removes the possibility of a damaging vote to strip him of his speakership, a scenario that grew more likely amid the conservative clamor over a shutdown.
Wisconsin’s delegation at the U.S. Capitol is talking about the impact of Speaker Boehner’s sudden announcement he’s resigning next month.
Rep. Raul Labrador, a favorite of conservatives who ran unsuccessfully for majority leader in January, declined to say Friday if he would run for Speaker. But though he is also known as a strong conservative, his tactics were never confrontational enough to satisfy the most conservative faction.
“The first job of any speaker is to protect this institution that we all love”, Boehner said.
If so, the state will gain in clout in the Congress, and coming as it does when Louisiana faces existential challenges like rising sea levels and an eroding coastline, the federal role in our affairs will only increase. The Senate is scheduled to hold a procedural vote Monday on a bill to fund the government – including money for Planned Parenthood – into December.
U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, D-Marietta, whose 6th District includes a portion of Mahoning County, said Boehner’s announcement is “another example” of his “putting country before self”.

Speaking with reporters after the speech, Cruz warned Boehner against surrendering to Democrats before leaving Congress.
