Republican leaders unveil changes to healthcare bill
The vote to repeal and replace significant parts of the Affordable Care Act, coincidentally scheduled for the ACA’s seventh anniversary, would be the first major congressional vote of Trump’s presidency, and Republicans have much on the line after seven years of promising to overhaul the 2010 health care law. They also said the bill “does not meet” goals previously described by President Donald Trump regarding state flexibility and ensuring coverage.

Rep. Brad Wenstrup said the Republican bill “gives Americans their freedom back and puts us on a path towards patient-centered care”.
Some big insurers dropped popular plans, leaving those seeking individual coverage fewer options.People in about a third of US counties had to turn to a single insurer if they purchased coverage on health care exchanges set up under the Affordable Care Act. Kevin Smith, a spokesman for Sen. The changes include an option to allow states to require people covered by Medicaid to work and a provision prohibiting extra funding to states that newly expand Medicaid. He said he’s “disappointed” Republicans are rushing the bill forward – a criticism Republicans notably leveled against Democrats while they were debating the ACA – and noted it’s passing through committees before the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has finished estimating its costs.
“Nothing’s changed”, said Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who co-founded the caucus.
What Congress ultimately crafts as the replacement bill will say a lot about who we are as a nation.
The American Health Care Act’s tax credits are not as generous as Obamacare’s subsidies for lower-income enrollees in their 50s and early 60s.
Verma, who was confirmed last week by the Senate largely along party lines in a 55-43 vote, has close ties to Vice President Mike Pence, having designed a conservative Medicaid expansion in IN during Pence’s tenure there as governor.
“After considering the current healthcare bill in a thorough and deliberate manner, I have concluded that, although the American Health Care Act focuses on several much-needed reforms to our healthcare system, in its current form I can not support this legislation”, Fitzpatrick said.
The list of proposed amendments also includes new tax credits for older Americans created to offset the cost of increased premiums under the new law, another avenue to potentially lure yes votes from moderate Republicans.
The abilities of states to oversee the management of Medicaid grants and to make gainful employment a prerequisite for receiving Medicaid count among these improvements-as does a higher tax credit for low-income and elderly Americans. If 21 Republicans vote against the bill, it will fail.
Dickerson asked Cruz if he would vote for the bill if it doesn’t include those reforms, to which the senator said, ‘I can not vote for any bill that keeps premiums rising’.

During an interview Monday night on Fox News’ “Hannity”, the speaker expressed optimism that changes to the GOP plan – which were released at the same time that Ryan’s pre-taped interview aired – would bring in the needed GOP support. “You will end up with great health care for a fraction of the price and that will take place immediately after we go in”.
