Other former Perry donors now backing Cruz include Deason’s son Doug, Cinemark founder Lee Roy Mitchell and his wife, Tandy, Dallas insurance executive Roy Bailey, Houston investor Jim Lee and Dallas tax consultant Brint Ryan. The Deason family of Dallas, who run Deason Capitol Services, also pledged their support to Cruz on Monday. “The Texas primary will matter much more versus previous years”.

“There’s only one true conservative to lead our party to victory against the Democrats”, Patrick said at the event at Cruz’s campaign headquarters in Houston. Cruz beat Dewhurst in 2012 to win his Senate seat, and Patrick knocked Dewhurst from his incumbent position as lieutenant governor in 2014.

Cruz is also expected to reveal he is beefing up his National Finance Committee with eight prominent donors to Perry, who dropped out of the presidential race last month amid fundraising problems.

“It is a tremendous honor for me that Dan has accepted the Texas Chairmanship of my campaign”, Cruz said in a statement. Senator Cruz and his team have been seeking the support of statewide elected leaders and in today’s press release, touted 41 state lawmakers and six members of congress among their backers.

The senator boasts about new Texas endorsements as the Bush family huddles with donors across town.

Cruz addressed his relationship with the Bush family Monday, saying only nice things but noting that he believes the country needs a change in direction.

The list of endorsements continues to solidify Cruz’s home-field advantage, and it comes as a GOP rival with deep Texas ties, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, convenes his family and top donors in Houston to chart a path forward for his struggling campaign.

“Rick Perry was a great governor for the State of Texas”, Cruz said. A September poll from Texas Lyceum had Cruz in second place, at 16%, trailing front-runner Donald Trump’s 21%, though the difference was within the margin of error.
