Republican Ted Cruz jumps seven points into second place: Reuters/Ipsos poll

“It’s very simple. I oppose amnesty”.

“I have never supported legalization, and I do not intend to support legalization”, Cruz said Tuesday.

Speaking before a campaign rally in Mechanicsville, Virginia, on Friday, Cruz told reporters his campaign was winning now as conservatives were uniting behind him.

“I led the fight against his legalization and amnesty”, the Texas senator said at one point.

Though he spent much of the first day of his southern tour mired in an immigration war that is growing increasingly nasty by the day, Cruz’s campaign joined the chorus of Republicans targeting Rubio for his missed Senate votes.

“Sen. Rubio unfortunately made the decision not to honor the promises he made to the men and women who elected him”.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, questions U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Sarah Saldana during a Senate Judiciary hearing to examine the Administration’s immigration enforcement policies, in Washington, July 21, 2015.

Cruz’s new move came as he looked to continue to rebuke Rubio for his attempt to pass comprehensive immigration reform in 2013, a bill that Cruz opposed, in part, over its pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who’s running second place for the Democratic presidential nomination, voted ‘no, ‘ lamenting that the package “gives more tax breaks to billionaires, encourages large corporations to ship jobs overseas and makes worse an already corrupt campaign finance system”.

Rubio has a two-point advantage over Clinton in a head-to-head contest, and Cruz ties the former secretary of State in a hypothetical general election.
