Republican US Sen. Wicker: Mississippi should remove Confederate emblem
An effort to remove the Confederate symbol from the flag was overwhelmingly rejected by voters in a 2001 state referendum. Additionally a Mississippi congressional consultant plans to take away it from House chamber in Washington, D.C., as properly. It is unclear when the full House would vote on it.

The Mississippi governor’s stance on the issue is all the starker given that high-ranking Republicans, including the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Reince Priebus, and ex- presidential contender Mitt Romney, have disavowed the symbol. “I think we’re making a mistake clinging to that image”.
In the 1990s, as state like Georgia and Alabama were gradually setting aside the Civil War-era flag in many official capacities, Mississippians fought to keep theirs, saying their heritage shouldn’t be folded up so easily.
McCarthy took to the floor to explain his decision. “Yesterday was pretty big”, Brenda McIntyre said.
Others weighed in with their choices.
On Monday night, Philip Gunn, Mississippi’s Republican Speaker of the House, called for a new flag.

“As a proud citizen of Mississippi, it is my personal hope that the state government will consider changing the state flag”, Cochran said. He certainly has no reason to jump into the middle of this debate. Spokesmen for McCarthy didn’t respond to a request for comment.
As Southern states act to remove vestiges of the Confederate flag in the wake of a Charleston church massacre last week, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant isn’t making any hasty moves.
BOISE (AP) | Mississippi’s flag, and the Confederate symbols embedded within it, has come down outside Boise’s City Hall. Thompson acknowledged change could take time.
“It might at some point have described who we were, but it does not reflect who we have become,”. “As someone who is still struggling for equality in this country, I’ve learned patience the hard way”.
“The confederate battle flag represents hate, subjugation and oppression and it doesn’t belong in public spaces”, said Crawford. Since Democrats are in the minority, most privileged measures are defeated on party-line votes. Or, the state Legislature could set an election, or change the flag themselves. Instead, he has the flags of two historically black colleges in addition to the American flag.

As of Wednesday morning, Wicker still had a state flag outside his Capitol Hill office. “Flags and emblems are chosen by a group of people as a symbol of all that unites and ties the group together”.
