Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump gives a thumbs up before boarding his campaign plane to depart from Laredo, Tex., in July.
In the new poll, the share who say they expect Trump to win the primary on February 9 has declined a bit since before the Iowa caucuses, dropping from 66% in the pre-caucus survey to 61% now, though he’s still the odds-on favorite among likely voters in New Hampshire. Even Kasich, an underdog moderate, raised nearly $23 million, spent most of it in New Hampshire, and went back to donors for another $4 million last month. Marco Rubio are the clear front-runners, and the remaining candidates could easily bow out of the race next week if they can’t revive their campaigns in the Granite State. Entrance polls in Iowa showed late-deciders there were also less apt to back Trump than their early-decider peers. Instead he backed Marco Rubio – saying the Florida senator has a better shot at getting elected and would make a great president.
But in a Trump- and Cruz-dominated primary, party power-brokers are desperate for someone to rally around.
Following Rubio’s finish in Iowa, several Republican rivals have stepped up their rhetorical attacks on the senator. In an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Friday, Gov. Jeb Bush said Rubio had accomplished “nothing” in the Senate. Chris Christie a sore loser after Christie accused him of being the “boy in the bubble” who won’t take questions. Trump, Cruz and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson have engaged in a three-way stand-off since Cruz’s surprise Iowa win.
Susan Duprey, who served as chief of staff to Ann Romney, Mitt Romney’s wife, in 2011 and 2012, announced her support for the Florida senator on Tuesday night. In New Hampshire, he’s making an appeal for support from libertarian voters who previously helped former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul pull off respectable finishes here.
