The U.S. Coast Guard says it has suspended a search for a man who apparently jumped off a freighter into Lake Michigan. That wasn’t yet clear Monday morning, he said.

WPBN-WTOM report (http://bit.ly/1MMnGlJ ) that the man went overboard about 1 a.m. Sunday from the Stewart J. Cort when the freighter was about four miles out from Big Sable. Search efforts had not resumed as of Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard reported, with waves in the area still forecast to reach 6 feet and gusts in excess of 30 miles per hour possible.

The name of the man who went overboard was not released. Cole said three detectives from Mason County and a deputy further north have been part of the investigation, along with the Coast Guard.

The incident happened just before two this morning near Big Sable Point on Lake Michigan.

Other crew members on the Cort saw the man climb over the rail and jump from the vessel, the Coast Guard reported.

Citing high winds and rough water conditions, coupled with the diminishing likelihood of finding the man alive, the search has been suspended by the Coast Guard.

Several other nearby commercial vessels aided in the search.
