Researchers say mosquitoes that carry Zika virus can live in Bay Area

The lion’s share of the cases were in New York City, where 270 confirmed cases had been reported as of Thursday. “That’s part of their basic responsibility”.

More than four months ago, President Barack Obama asked Congress for .9 billion in emergency funds to address the Zika threat through vaccine development, mosquito abatement, contraception and maternal care.

Sean McMann, a communications specialist with Dutchess County, said that, among other steps, the county’s Department of Behavioral and Community Health is monitoring the southern portion of the county and has issued several public health advisories to physicians reminding them to screen for Zika exposure through travel or sexual contact.

For instance, the bill kept funding away from Planned Parenthood clinics that Democrats say are vital to helping women protect themselves from becoming pregnant if they are at risk from Zika.

The primary mosquito that transmits Zika, Aedes aegypti, prefers to live in or near our homes, low to the ground, and close to humans.

Shortly before the Senate vote, the Florida Department of Health announced the state’s first birth of a baby with a Zika-linked defect, microcephaly, to a Haitian woman who contracted the virus overseas.

The U.S. Zika cases reported so far have all involved people who contracted the virus outside the United States, or were infected through unprotected sex with an infected partner. Similar evidence was also found in placental tissue from two fetuses whose mothers suffered a miscarriage at 11 and 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Use insect repellent and wear long sleeves, socks and long trousers. There have not yet been any cases reported of local transmission of the virus in the United States.

“These CDC funds will enable states and territories to strengthen their Zika preparedness and response plans”, said Stephen C. Redd, M.D., director of CDC’s Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response.
