Firefighters have had difficulty controlling the flames.

Early Thursday morning, tankers and volunteers from Fredon, Hampton, Montague, Sandyston and Stillwater, along with two engines from McAfee and Sussex Borough, deployed to North Brunswick to assist with fire operations at the scene of a massive warehouse fire that has been burning since the pre-dawn hours Wednesday, Sheriff Michael Strada said. “We were right in the line of fire, should the wind blow in that direction”, a resident said.

“They had tower ladders placed all around the building”, Rome said.

Officials had not detected any unsafe levels of toxins, Mayor Francis Womac III said.

The cause of the blaze was not known and the investigation would not begin until the flames were out. Eight businesses were destroyed in a warehouse that contained myriad home finishing products.

Many said they awoke to the smell of smoke and the sounds of several explosions. The main occupant is New York-based Achim Import Co., which makes floor coverings, blinds and household furnishings. The Weather Channel reports that the warehouse stretches over 50 football fields in length.

Smoke could be seen for miles, even as far away as New York City: a few residents of the nearby Birchwood Apartments condo complex were evacuated and described the scene there. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, including a hand injury, smoke inhalation and heat fatigue. “I woke up to banging on the door, text messages that there was fire at the warehouse”. North Brunswick officials are also asking residents to conserve water and warning that water may be discolored.
