Residents gather downtown to honor Dr. King in MLK parade
Congress initiated the Martin Luther King Day of Service in 1994. Day parade and ceremony. Many were holding hands, others carried signs, while some were heard singing along the route to remember a man who symbolizes civil rights and liberties for our country. “It is in a building process to get us to the finish line”, Richmond said.

Rountree says being the best person you can be, is the proper way to honor Dr. King.
“From my generation, we’ve come a long way”, said Janet Goodson of the Martin Luther King, Jr. steering committee.

“We need to take actions that make quality educations a reality for every child in America regardless of his or her zip code and that moves american forward to debt free college for all Americans again”, explained O’Malley.
“Some of the violence that goes on here, it’s very sad that us blacks are killing each other the way they are”, she said. “[That] is one of the goals Dr. King had in mind – give back to your community and watch your community grow”.
In Minneapolis, activists with the group Black Lives Matter planned to march onto a Mississippi River bridge that connects Minneapolis and St. Paul during a Martin Luther King Day rally.
This is the first year the walk has ended downtown, and organizers say this great in bringing more*people in the community together. “Just proud to be the person I am”, said Whitney Jones. “We have choices. What’s your choice going to be when you get up?”
Rountree says while social injustice is still around, Dr. King would be more upset with how African Americans treat one another.

The event was titled “Moving forward with change” and was hosted by the Boyton Street Community Center of Marion and students who participate in the After School All-Star program.
