Residents near Spring Creek 2 Fire in Battlement Mesa area back home

The evacuation orders issued in wake of the 621-acre Spring Creek 2 Fire are set to be lifted at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Local and federal wildfire crews on Sunday evening continued to fight the fire that started Friday on private land in Garfield County. No injuries had been reported. Winds on Saturday afternoon might push the fire near homes in the evacuation order. The American Red Cross is available to offer assistance. “The scope of it, where its moving, how its burning, the direction its traveling”, said Meghan Terlecky with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

No primary residences have burned in the fire, but four outbuildings, three trailers and three vehicles have been lost, as well as several power poles.

According to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office the cause of the fire remains unknown as of Saturday they will continue to assess it. Reverse emergency notification calls have also been placed to the approximately 24 home that are affected.

The active part of the fire is up on a ridge and crews have been using planes and helicopters to drop slurry and water. Grand Valley Fire Protection District, DeBeque Fire District, Garfield County, Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Land Management, Mesa County and Mesa County Sheriff’s Office all were involved in the battle. Holy Cross Energy has restored power to homes in the area of Spring Creek Road and Wallace Creek Road.
