In Srinagar, the family of a man who died in a hospital Friday night claimed he was beaten by security personnel, but police records say he succumbed to injuries he had suffered in a road accident.
The Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag arrived here yesterday to take stock of the situation in the Valley which has been simmering since the killing of Hizbul Mujhadeen militant commander Burhan Wani on July 8.
The sources said the army had suspended its anti-militancy operations in the south for over two months because of the street unrest.
“The local civil administration will have to ask (for) the army there like it happened in Haryana, where the (Jat) agitation took place”.
Significantly, Army chief General Dalbir Singh on Friday reviewed the security situation in the valley, especially in the south, defence sources said here.
While shops, business establishments and petrol pumps continued to remain shut during the day, they open in the evening on some days of the week in view of the 12-hour relaxation in the strike from 6 PM announced by separatists.
The curfew, largely removed since the beginning of this week, was re-imposed on Friday as the authorities feared more violence.
Crowds in south Kashmir have defied curfews and restrictions during the last 64 days.
The separatists have extended the shutdown programme till September 16. The Chief reviewed the security situation and collaborative measures of Security Forces towards ensuring peace and calm in the region. The forces retaliated with pellet guns, leaving dozens of protesters injured.
According to officials, there was no curfew anywhere in the valley but restrictions curbing all pedestrian and traffic movement except that of essential services were imposed in Srinagar.
