RetailWire News Article: Amazon plans to crush Black Friday with ‘Prime Day’

Amazon, the online buying and selling behemoth that originated as online bookstore and subsequently became one of the Internet’s largest marketplaces, is celebrating its 20 birthday later this month.

The retailer will pack the day with its “Lightning Deals”, (quick blue-light special type discounts), among other deals and will expand its free two-day shipping to more items.

The effort underscores how important the 10-year-old Prime membership program is to Amazon and its future. Whatever the actual count, it clearly is not high enough to satisfy the company as Amazon has announced an exclusive, single-day shopping event for existing Prime members as well as those taking advantage of a free 30-day trial of the service. Prime customers were required to pay $5.99 for the same-day delivery service in the US but in May, Amazon eliminated the fees, which made Prime even more popular, Tech Times reported.

An Amazon statement said: “Members will enjoy deals on items flawless for summer adventures, their to-do list, family road trips, back to school supplies, and everyday essentials”. “If you’re not already a Prime member, you’ll want to join so you don’t miss out on one of the biggest deals extravaganzas in the world”. New deals start every 10 minutes.

How can I take part?

The creation of the new shopping holiday is a way for Amazon to grow its membership, which costs $99 a year. Amazon is now starting a new shopping phenomenon called “Prime Day” for their Prime members on July 15, showcasing more deals than the ones the online retailer usually offers on Black Friday. “It feels like Amazon Prime is amping up to try to get some more people in the franchise for when Black Friday rolls around”.

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day in the year and takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas. A report by CNET cited that, on average, Prime members spend $1,500 a year through Amazon, compared to $625 for non-members.
