He will begin his duties with Tracy’s police department, starting February 1, 2016.
The three will interview with the 15-member City Police Chief Appointment Advisory Committee, Tucson Police Officers Association, Tucson Police Department command and the city’s executive leadership team.
“I’m very excited about the opportunity, and look forward to continuing efforts to engage the community and help it grow”, Esquivel said in a statement.
Esquivel was one of four final candidates to become the next police chief in Tucson, Arizona, according to Tucson city officials.
The other three finalists are Malik Aziz, a deputy chief of Dallas Police Department; Rick S. Gregory, vice president and senior research associate at the Institute for Intergovernmental Research in Tallahassee, Florida; and Christopher J. Magnus, chief of police in Richmond, California.
Esquivel is a native San Josean who has been with the San Jose police for 30 years.
Esquivel led the department through unprecedented trials that included chronic understaffing, an election year dominated by merciless sparring over the city’s public safety picture, and scrutiny about racial sensitivity and police militarization in light of national movements.
He has served in the department’s patrol, narcotics enforcement, special operations – Mobile Emergency Response Group and Equipment, investigations, field training, internal affairs and administration units.

Eddie Garcia, San Jose’s assistant police chief, will take over Esquivel’s role on an interim basis next year.
