Apple is having a rough day with the rollout of its new software platforms: in addition to the bug that was bricking users’ iPhones when upgrading to iOS 10, the new version of iTunes – iTunes 12.5.1 – is also having issues connecting to iCloud Music Library this morning.
When the 4th generation of the Apple TV was introduced there were inconsistencies in Apple’s documentation that made it unclear whether game developers could require a third-party game controller. Starting with tvOS 10, you can search movies by topic. It gives iTunes a much needed design change that makes navigating Apple Music much easier. This lets you watch videos from iTunes while you’re multitasking in other windows.
Game developers also have access to the ReplayKit APIs with tvOS 10. When you enable this option, tvOS automatically installs any tvOS apps for which you already own the corresponding iOS app, either free or paid.
Unfortunately, the best part of that update – the single sign-on for pay TV subscribers – has been delayed until later this spring. The Photos app is also getting an update with the Memories feature. Using Siri, you can turn off your connected lights or adjust the temperature of your home thermostat. Combined with things like location awareness, HomeKit on tvOS opens up some interesting automation possibilities.
