Inarritu was nominated for Best Director, giving him the chance to win two Oscars in a row for the same category.

The best actor nominees are “The Danish Girl” actor Eddie Redmayne, “Steve Jobs” actor Michael Fassbender, Leonardo DiCaprio of “The Revenant”, “The Martian” actor Matt Damon, and Bryan Cranston of “Trumbo“.

Left on the outside were Todd Haynes’ acclaimed lesbian romance “Carol” and the N.W.A biopic “Straight Outta Compton”.

The 88th annual Academy Award nominations for best foreign-language film have been announced.

The brutal frontier saga “The Revenant” won the morning with 12 nominations, while the acting categories were again filled entirely by white performers. Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Saoirse Ronan and fellow Globes victor Brie Larson have also been recognised for their standout roles.

The actor was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the movie Creed.

The best supporting actress honour contenders are Rooney Mara (‘Carol’), Jennifer Jason Leigh for “The Hateful Eight”, Alicia Vikander (‘The Danish Girl’), Kate Winslet (‘Steve Jobs’) and Rachel McAdams for “Spotlight”. “The Martian” was nominated for best picture, but Scott was shut out of the best director list. The screenplay, adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Price of Salt”, garnered a nod.

“The Revenant” was directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who also helmed last year’s big Oscars victor “Birdman”, which earned four golden statuettes including for best picture and director.

They will compete with singles including Lady Gaga’s track Til It Happens To You from The Hunting Ground and The Weeknd’s Earned It from Fifty Shades Of Grey.

Williams was unavailable to work on “Bridge of Spies“, but did snag an Oscar nomination for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“. As a sequel, the blockbuster was widely expected not to be nominated for best picture. Walt Disney was nominated 59 times.

Should the Mexican director win next month, he will be joining just two other directors – Joseph Mankiewicz and John Ford – who won the award for two consecutive years. The film’s nod for best picture is Spielberg’s ninth in that category, the most for any individual producer.

The documentary about Amy Winehouse, called Amy, is nominated for best documentary feature, as is What Happened, Miss Simone? about singer Nina Simone, The Look Of Silence, Cartel Land and Winter On Fire: Ukraine’s Fight For Freedom.
