Revenant leads Oscar nominees

“The Revenant” roared like a bear Thursday morning, topping all films with 12 nominations for the 88th Academy Awards. The favourite and my pick is Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies, but Golden Globe victor Sylvester Stallone, reprising his iconic role as Rocky Balboa in Creed, is a serious threat. Lenny Abrahamson (“Room”) comes in at 2-1, followed by Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”) at 3-1, Adam McKay (“The Big Short”) at 5-1, and George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), at a somewhat surprising 7-1.

“The Martian”, which trailed the top two films with seven nominations, picked up a best-actor nomination for Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded alone on Mars. Sure he was great in Wolf Of Wall Street and Blood Diamond, but those were nasty subjects nobody much wanted to think about – especially people with big money dripping in jewels.

There are always snubs, and this year the talk is about racial bias.

The Academy also honored Eddie Redmayne with a best actor nomination.

These are just some of the biggest snubs in this year’s Oscar Nominations.

Actor Brie Larson is also nominated for her role as a mother held captive with her child for years in the film “Room”.

Brazilian filmmaker and screenwriter Ale Abreu’s “Boy and the World” has been nominated for the first time for Best Animated Feature Film. Yes, Vikander is in the running for Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl (her role really should’ve seen her in the Lead Actress category but that’s a discussion for another day) but she was stunning in Ex Machina and it seems an bad shame to ignore that.

Two-time Oscar victor Cate Blanchett has a shot at number three with a Best Actress nomination for “Carol”.

“It’s actually worse than previous year”.

“Wow, the acting categories are VERY white this year”. Criminal. Otherwise, Best Picture is a healthy group: The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant, Room, and Spotlight.

Micheal Keaton and Rachel McAdams in “Spotlight”.

“There was the year Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won Oscars”.

“The Force Awakens” is a record-breaking force at the box office, but failed to land a spot on the list of best picture nominees. That’s Walt Disney with 59 nominations. Charlie Puth, which featured in Furious 7, from the Original Song category proves that incredible chart success doesn’t matter to the Academy, not one bit.

– Speaking of composers, Thomas Newman’s original score for “Bridge of Spies” is his 13th nomination.

No nerves for Oscar nominee Di Caprio because'the work is done
