The nomination for Pixar (which also landed a best screenplay nod for “Inside Out”) restores its almost unblemished record of Oscar nominations, broken only by 2011’s “Cars 2” and 2013’s “Monsters University”.
Supporting actress nods went to Jennifer Jason Leigh, “The Hateful Eight”; Rooney Mara, “Carol”; Alicia Vikander, “The Danish Girl”; Kate Winslet, “Steve Jobs”; and Rachel McAdams, “Spotlight”.
Inarritu was nominated for Best Director, giving him the chance to win two Oscars in a row for the same category.
The Revenant is leading the race for the 2016 Oscars with 12 nominations, with Mad Max: Fury Road scoring 10.
The Oscars will be held February 28 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.
The actor won a Golden Globe Award on Sunday night and was given a standing ovation. Michael Keaton was not nominated for supporting actor but “Spotlight” is competing for best picture along with “The Big Short“, “Bridge of Spies“, “Brooklyn”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Martian”, “The Revenant” and “Room”. Joining him were Miller, Adam McKay for The Big Short, Lenny Abrahamson for Room and Tom McCarthy for Spotlight.
They announced the nominees for Achievement in Cinematography are Carol, The Hateful Eight, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Revenant and Sicario.
The Oscar nominees for best supporting actor are: Christian Bale, “The Big Short”; Tom Hardy, “The Revenant”; Mark Ruffalo, “Spotlight”; Mark Rylance, “Bridge of Spies”; Sylvester Stallone, “Creed”.
The nominees for best original screenplay are “Spotlight”, “Ex Machina”, “Inside Out”, “Bridge of Spies” and “Straight Outta Compton”. Their respective directors also were among five nominated for prizes from the Directors Guild of America, whose winners often align with the Oscars.
The foreign language category drew films from Hungary (“Son Of Saul”), France (“Mustang”), Jordan (“Theeb”), Denmark (“A War”) and Colombia (“Embrace the Serpent”).
The nod for the British soul singer and his writing partner Jimmy Napes comes just days after they won a Golden Globe for the hit. Finding room for such acclaimed blockbusters alongside smaller indies was part of the reason the academy expanded the best-picture field to up to 10 nominees.
Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs, actor John Krasinski and directors Guillermo del Toro and Ang Lee made the announcements in a two-part live news conference from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Here’s the nominees for the key categories; the full list will follow shortly.

Netflix did, however, again break into the documentary category with “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom“. Chris Rock will host.
