Revenge drama “The Revenant” and space adventure “The Martian” took the top film awards at Sunday’s Golden Globes, setting them up as formidable Oscar contenders after a night of surprises and stinging barbs from return host Ricky Gervais.

Last night, Hollywood honored some of the best performances of 2015 at the Golden Globe Awards. In his eloquent acceptance speech, DiCaprio remarked, “Wow”.

According to Deadline, Gervais has been asked to return for the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards in 2017.

Brie Larson (Room) won the best actress, drama (Room), over Cate Blanchett (Carol), Rooney Mara (Carol), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl).

Game of Thrones, Best Television Drama.

“Inside Out” was the best animated film, while Aaron Sorkin walked away with best screenplay for “Steve Jobs”, and Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” from Bondflick “Specter” was judged the best song.

Inarritu’s movie “Birdman” won four Oscars last year including for best picture and best director, and many critics believe the Mexican director could emerge triumphant again this year. It was refreshing to see someone who is, for all intents and purposes, a rookie among the other trophy winners. It was her first nomination and first win.

Denzel Washington was awarded the Cecil B Demille Award, the Globes’ lifetime achievement prize. She mentioned almost everyone who makes “American Horror Story”, all the way up to executive producers who are rarely mentioned in these speeches.

I give the 2016 Golden Globes a 3/5 on the golden globe scale.
