Tesla says its latest Model S is the quickest production vehicle on sale.

The Model X P100D, on the other hand, will hit 60m/h (96.5km/h) from standstill in just 2.9 seconds while still delivering an EPA estimated range of 289 miles (465 kilometres). The auto also boasts much better range, traveling roughly 315 miles on the EPA cycle.

The new battery pack is also available for the performance version of the Model X sport utility vehicle.

In a blog post, Tesla said the Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode is now “the third fastest accelerating production vehicle ever produced”. Those who already have their P90D cars can also upgrade but they will need to pay $20,000 as their existing 90kWh battery pack will have to be recycled. The P90D version of the Model X provided 250 miles of range.

To be fair, the Porsche 918 Spyder and the LaFerrari are both capable of that acceleration.

“These are very profound milestones and I think will help convince people around the world that electric is the future”, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on a conference call with journalists. Musk first unveiled models with the Ludicrous mode past year. It looks like the company has finally achieved a good battery time for its new cars. Meanwhile, the Model X SUV will see speeds of zero-to-sixty in only 2.9 seconds.

If you already have a P90D Ludicrous model of either vehicle you can also upgrade to the 100kWh battery for $20,000, which covers the cost of the new power pack and recycling the old one.
