Rewind: Sharks dominate Kings in nasty season opener

It was clear that the Sharks were out for blood with something to prove as they had their top unit out there on the power-play even with a game well in hand.

When teammates describe Sharks goalie Martin Jones, the same three adjectives seem to pop up over and over and over again: calm, cool and poised.

“The bottom line is not everything here is broken”, DeBoer said.

While the Sharks figure to be improved, so do several other teams in the Western Conference. “A fresh voice helps, but like I said, and Pete had said, he’s bringing new ideas to this team as well which should rejuvenate us, re-energize us and get us back to where we want to be”.

For more on the Sharks, see the Working the Corners blog at. The Sharks blew a 3-0 series lead in the first round in 2014 to lose to Los Angeles and then finished out of the playoffs last season.

Last night’s game was pretty fun – and not just because the Sharks pulverized the Kings on the road. But his 1.99 goals against average gives San Jose the confidence he can be the No. 1 goalie the team needs. Pavelski emerged as the public leader last season and was named captain for this season.

“Obviously I’m not doing this alone”, he said. “It’s nice, we just have to keep replicating the game”.

This season however, there is a lot to like about the Sharks defensively.

For the second year in a row, the San Jose Sharks staged a rout of the Los Angeles Kings on opening night.

While all those were highlights of Wednesday’s win, the special teams play stood out as particularly impressive. The Sharks host the Anaheim Ducks in their home opener Saturday, while the Kings meet the visiting Arizona Coyotes in the second contest of their five-game homestand Friday.

Tonight’s game will be the 132nd consecutive home regular-season sellout and team-record 162nd consecutive sellout at Staples Center, including playoff games.

The Brown hit was fairly glossed over by the NBC Sports Network broadcasters and no call was made on the ice, but it wasn’t long before footage of the hit made the rounds, drawing strong opinions from many. No one outside of general manager Doug Wilson, the two Joes and McLellan knows exactly what happened behind closed doors a year ago leading to the awkward scenario where Pavelski did everything BUT display a “C” on his jersey.

“I don’t think he’s had a talented a team as San Jose as potentially could be since he had that Devils team with Kovalchuk and Parise that went to the Stanley Cup finals”.

Hopefully the Sharks won’t find themselves down two men often this season, but the set up here is very good.
