RG3 leaves with concussion in Redskins’ 21-17 win over Lions

To end his second series of the night, Griffin had to pick himself up off the turf after Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy came clean on a delayed blitz and drilled Washington’s QB in the chest-on a clean hit, for the record.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden benched Griffin three games into his comeback. He suffered a concussion and a stinger in his shoulder, and was otherwise battered throughout the course of the night. First, Griffin must pass the concussion protocol, and that’s not likely to happen before next week’s dress rehearsal. “We will get a further exam and do all the things we have to do”.

Gruden said he had “no idea” how long the 2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year would be sidelined.

Griffin’s first fumble was recovered by the Redskins after a strip-sack on their opening possession. And the solutions started to rise to the surface during the preseason Week 2 loss to the Washington Redskins. He played all five of his pro seasons with Atlanta, starting all 15 games before he was hurt in 2013.

On the other hand, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy have both played well this preseason, and have made their cases to be the starting quarterback. McCoy finished with a ideal quarterback rating of 158.3. Right guard Larry Warford injured his right ankle later in the first half when Ameer Abdullah landed on after a short run. They later added to their lead with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Dan Orlovsky to Jeremy Ross about halfway through the second quarter. For that final hit, it’s understandable he may have been feeling the pressure given how poorly the protection was up to that point. “And the job of the backup quarterback is to stay ready and jump in and then not have the offense miss a beat”.

“It’s frustrating, but I said to the team, it’s the second preseason game and we’re trying to get better”.

Stepping away from Griffin III concerns, the Redskins (2-0) had another impressive performance from rookie running back Matt Jones, who gained 44 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.

He obviously didn’t want to reveal his identity; he’s in an awkward situation in a fractious locker room. “He gets through the second level, he’s a problem”.

Douglas was asked if Donovan McNabb – whom he played with in Philly from 1999 to 2002, and then again in 2004 – was ‘one of the guys.’ As Douglas described, McNabb also fit within this separatist construct. “You have to continue to work hard as the best”.
