RIALTO: Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus

“This is the time of year we expect to see a rise in West Nike virus activity and the positive results confirm that”, said Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert. Mosquitos contract the virus when they feed on infected birds, then spread the virus when the mosquitoes bite other animals or humans.

Mosquitoes collected from a trap in Canyon County have tested positive for West Nile Virus, officials announced Monday.

Most people who are infected with it will not develop any type of illness.

“Residents in El Paso should know that the Department of Public Health and the Environmental Services Department are working closely together to help protect the community from disease”, said Fernando Gonzalez, Lead Epidemiologist. There is no vaccine or prophylaxis available, the only prevention is through avoiding and preventing mosquito bites. Don’t apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin.
