Rick Carlisle, Mavericks Agree Upon Five-Year, $35M Extension
Rick Carlisle now is the most well-paid coach in the National Basketball Association without an executive title.

The Dallas Mavericks have signed Head Coach Rick Carlisle to a contract extension.
Rick Carlisle officially has a job in Dallas for the next five years. Terms are the deal weren’t disclosed, but suffice it to say he’ll be here for a very, very long time, and that’s the way it should be. The contract would reportedly take effect in 2017-18 through the 2021-22 seasons.
That’s why Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson are making sure they don’t. His teams in Detroit, Indiana and Dallas have missed the playoffs only twice in 14 seasons. He’s amassed a 304-222 record in just over seven seasons in charge of Dallas.
But Matthews stayed and got a maximum contract to help the Mavericks get younger in the backcourt. While they’ve had a tough time bringing other stars to Dallas to complement Nowitzki as he enters the twilight of his career, Carlisle’s great coaching and game planning with his assistant staff has kept them highly competitive. That will likely change, though, before the deal actually begins in two years. “He just knows how and when to push the right buttons. In a long season, that’s sometimes tough”.
The 31-year-old, who has been diagnosed with a knee sprain, believes that he will be fit for the Mavericks’ clash with the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, but Carlisle has made it clear that Williams will not be rushed back.

Cuban immediately broke up key parts of that team, and Carlisle has been working with retooled rosters nearly every year since.
