Lin, MD, professor and chief of urologic oncology at University of Washington in Seattle, along with colleagues carried out the first analysis of clinical factors linked to outcomes of 905 men (median age, 63 years), who were enrolled in the study. If the test reveals a PSA count below a certain level, the PSA blood test may not need to be done again for another ten years. Further treatment, as in a biopsy, depends on how high the PSA is and how much it’s changed from previous readings. In that group, 53% were started given treatment whereas 31% stayed on active surveillance. If further results lead to suspicion around the prostate, an MRI Fusion Guided Biopsy is the next step to determine if an elevated PSA is an indication of prostate cancer. “Slow-growing prostate cancers can be treated with active surveillance”. In 2012, 2,484 patients with invasive prostate cancer were diagnosed; of those, 90% were Jews, 5% Arabs and 5% Christians or without religion determined.

So besides prostate cancer, what else can cause a PSA to rise, fluctuate or become elevated? “The radiation is tightly conformed to a precise location”.

Men aged 55 to 69 should get checked for prostate cancer, or younger, if he has a family history of prostate cancer or is African American.
