Rickie Fowler blows Ryder Cup chance

Patrick Reed secured a one-shot victory at The Barclays on Sunday, a result that also clinched him a place on the US Ryder Cup team. But after carding two bogeys and a double-bogey against one birdie in his final four holes, Fowler failed to qualify for one of the eight automatic bids onto the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Fellow American Sean O’Hair (66) and Argentine Emiliano Grillo (69) were joint second on eight-under.

It was what Patrick Reed described as a huge win and it came on the last day of play at the Barclay’s PGA tournament at Bethpage Black.

His tee shot into deep rough left of the 15th fairway led to bogey.

“To finally close one out this week was huge”, said Reed, who had nine top 10 and two runner-up finishes this season. The next two weeks bring two more high profile tournaments during the Fedex Cup playoffs and are Fowler’s best two opportunities to impress Captain Davis Love III before he makes three of his four selections on Monday, Sept. 12.

And Chad Campbell, despite missing the cut, moved to 100th in the playoff standings with only the top 100 moving on to the second postseason event. Although he couldn’t repeat, he will still go on in this four-tournament playoffs in the Deutsche Bank Championship up in Boston next week with a very good shot to win the $10 million awaiting the cumulative champion, awarded at the end of the Tour Championship at East Lake in September. While Fowler slid down the leaderboard, the 26-year-old Reed still held a two-stroke lead entering the final hole.

Reed tried to downplay the meaning of making the Ryder Cup team, suggesting through the week that his focus was winning the tournament.

Reed was delighted with his win but acknowledged his game needed work after he recorded bogeys at the 16th and 18th holes.

“It was kind of creeping back in, just going through my mind on events earlier this year when I had these kind of stretches”, Reed said. The fourth pick will be after the Tour Championship, so that’s another month to audition.

But Fowler isn’t the only big name who will need to be picked by Love to make the trip to Hazeltine. John Daly (Dardanelle, Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 3-under 69 to put him in a tie for 21st at 5 under, good enough for $23,900.

Another mistake at the last dropped McIlroy back to level par alongside Olympic champion Justin Rose, who birdied three of the last six holes to salvage a 71 after a poor outward half, and he delighted the fans by completing the final hole with his Rio gold medal draped around his neck.

“It is awesome”, said Reed, who earned $1.5 million for his first win of 2016. The 20-year-old Thai player made a 12-birdie putt on the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a four-stroke victory.

Tied for the third-round lead with Taiwan’s Cheng Tsung Pan, Brehm closed with a bogey for a 3-under 68 and his first Web.com Tour victory. American David Lipsky (67) and Spain’s Adrian Otaegui (67) were two strokes back.
