Rickie Fowler’s Chance to Lock Up Automatic Ryder Cup Spot Slips Away

That’s because after three losing teams this decade, after watching USA player after US player implode with the pressure on, after seeing too many of these instances of guys backing their way onto the team or collapsing when the pressure is greatest, along comes Patrick Reed.

Olympic gymnastics star Gabby Douglas was hospitalized Sunday night, forcing her to miss a scheduled appearance with her USA teammates at the MTV Video Music Awards. The caution gave him another shot, though, and he took advantage. Larson led a race-high 41 laps.

Four-time Barclays victor Vijay Singh of Fiji (71) finished even-par for the tournament in a tie for 53rd. Buescher is seven points ahead of David Ragan for 30th place on the season.

So while it’s a mature stance for Reed to insist he’s just attempting to compartmentalize a win at Bethpage Black without worrying about the impending Ryder Cup scenario, that’s easier said than done. That patience was rewarded Sunday at The Barclays, where Reed rallied for a one-shot victory that turned a solid year into something much more palatable.

Patrick Reed’s win at The Barclays clinches his second straight spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Rickie Fowler threw away a sure spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

“Anybody in the top 100 has to be our radar because a guy could get hot the next two weeks and move himself to the Tour Championship and be in the running for the FedEx Cup”, Love said.

Day said he had a few issues with his driving this week but was happy to finish in contention despite not being able to get his tee shots in play more often.

NEW YORK-Rickie Fowler fired a bogey-free 68, closing with a five-foot birdie putt Saturday for a one shot lead after the third round of The Barclays, the first of four PGA Tour playoff events.

Biggest disappointment: Fowler (74) lost out on both a victory and an automatic berth to the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Sean O’Hair (66) and Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo (69) finished one shot behind in a tie for second place.

Thomas Pieters has thrown a wrench into what otherwise might have been an easy decision for European Ryder Cup Captain Darren Clarke. It was the fourth time Fowler has failed to convert a 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour, though he remained optimistic. Fowler’s loss was Zach Johnson’s gain as the 2015 British Open champion claimed the eighth and final automatic spot.

Captain Davis Love III will make three of his four picks after the conclusion of the BMW Championship.

Reed called Sunday’s victory – his fifth on the PGA Tour and first since January 2015’s Tournament of Champions in Hawaii – the byproduct of simply taking care of business by focusing on winning the tournament.

“It will hurt”, Fowler said. Reed made three birdies on the next four holes to tie for the lead, and he seized control early on the back nine.

Fowler went 55 holes without a bogey, dating back to his ninth hole in the first round Thursday, before a bogey on No. 11.

The highlight of his round was an incredible 71-foot birdie at 15, a downhill putt with massive right to left borrow that never looked like missing.

O’Hair was among five players who moved into the top 100 in the FedEx Cup, advancing to the next playoff event at the TPC Boston that starts Friday. He moved from 108th to 15th in the FedEx standings.
