“I want to share this award with all the First Nations people represented in this film and all the indigenous peoples around the world”, said DiCaprio.

Best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”.

He also got in the usual digs about Hollywood narcissism.

“We knew it was good and Mark Pedowitz of the CW picked it out and he’s the one that saved us”, Bloom said. There has never been an Oscar best picture victor that hasn’t also been on the PGA’s list of best picture nominees since the guild started handing out awards in 1990. Stay tuned for a very Ricky Gervais joke about what he does with his Golden Globe statues in his spare time.

The frontrunner for best comedy or musical film is “The Big Short”, based on a book about the financial crisis of 2007-2008.

Much of their introduction was bleeped in the broadcast but Hill made the packed ballroom at the Beverly Hilton laugh when he thanked The Revenant director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu saying: “I’m a two-year-old bear from the Sierran mountains and you took a chance on me”.

The event was carried live on television in the United States – but with a delay of a few seconds to bleep out Gervais’s dirtiest jokes for a primetime USA audience.

Other films vying for top honors include the lesbian romance “Carol” starring Cate Blanchett, epic survival thriller “The Revenant” with Leonardo DiCaprio, the harrowing kidnap tale “Room”, and the summer blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road”.

Pop music star Lady Gaga oozed Hollywood glamour with a gown that was some distance away from her wild concert stage get-ups.

After hosting the 67th, 68th and 69th Golden Globes to a mixed critical response, Gervais thought his time was up.

Christian Slater was announced as the best supporting actor in a series, limited series or TV movie for his role in Mr Robot. Best comedy series was a similar upset, with Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle“, winning over the HBO heavyweight “Veep”.

The 41-year-old actor born in Hollywood earned his third career Golden Globe. “What a year she’s had, she became a role model (but) she didn’t do a lot for women drivers”, referencing last February’s Malibu auto accident involving Jenner.

Gervais also brought up the controversy of “The Martian” being nominated as a comedy.

Best actress in a drama went to Brie Larson, the star of the captive mother-son drama “Room”.

Matt Damon won best actor in a comedy for his performance in Ridley Scott’s box-office hit “The Martian”.

Joy actress and victor Jennifer Lawrence was pilloried for her $US52 million ($NZ79 million) paycheck.
