Ricky Gervais returned as host of the show after Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took over hosting duties for three years.

Ridley Scott’s sci-fi hit The Martian was named best comedy or musical film, which allowed the director to joke that he expected to receive that honour posthumously, and its star Matt Damon picked up the best actor award in that category.

It remains one of the highest grossing films of all time, generating $660 million at the U.S. box office on its release.

This was the big victor of the awards taking home the best motion picture for drama.

There were some surprises though, such as the resounding success of The Revenant, which won best film, best director and best actor which went to Leonardo DicCaprio. “I was at Leonardo DiCaprio’s table”, he shared, adding that his wife, Emily Blunt, couldn’t attend because she was shooting a movie.

Jennifer Lawrence, victor for best actress-comedy for her film Joy, was also snapped talking with ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult.

“Where are you David? So, here you go: I’d rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than with Bill Cosby”. “Thank you so much, to the other fantastic performances in this category. I mean that as a compliment, I just heard it. But really, it’s such a good, pure thing”, Lawrence said.

Awards race dark horse “Steve Jobs” also got some love on Sunday with wins for Kate Winslet, for best supporting actress, and Aaron Sorkin, for the screenplay.
