Worldwide, the seventh film in the “Star Wars” franchise has earned more than $1.86 billion. It earned US$29.5 million to take second place. The action-comedy still managed to disappoint slightly, opening below the $41.5 million that the first Ride Along surprised with in January of 2014 and somewhat below industry expectations in the high thirties for the three-day weekend.
“Detective Chinatown” from director Chen Sicheng continued its strong showing. The Universal release took in $35.3 million Friday through Sunday.
The Revenant, in its fourth week in North American theatres, got a boost from news of its nomination for 12 Oscars last Thursday.
‘Ride Along 2’ made a chart-topping debut with $34 million. ‘Brooklyn’ climbed 57% with $1.6 million and sits with a domestic total of $24.6 million.
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s gritty frontier saga, which is loosely inspired by Michael Punke’s fact-based novel on legendary frontier guide Hugh Glass, is also performing well in the United States, raking in $87.7 million in box office takings since its release.
The shot in question appears to take place outside a rather ancient-looking temple, with frozen figures burned into place Pompeii-style, which would at least fit the lightsaber’s ancient origins.
Holiday with an estimated 4-day gross of $39.5-M from 3,175 theaters, behind the 1st film, but enough to win the weekend ahead of The Revenant and Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Star Wars: The Force Awakens. “The Last Witch Hunter”, $9.3 million. 7. Yet, analysts now suggest the film will finish in a global second position, sandwiched in-between James Cameron’s Titanic ($2.19BN) and Avatar ($2.79BN). Falling a lower-than-expected 38%, it has now grossed a staggering $129.2 million domestically. “The 5th Wave”, $8.2 million. 8. Its A CinemaScore and positive reviews (well, positive for a Bay film) could help 13 Hours hold on over the coming weeks, but even the best-case scenario probably won’t see its domestic earnings surpass its $50 million production budget by all that much. “Sisters”, $5.5 million. 10.

Closing out the top ten was Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, down four spots in its third weekend with $3.4 million (no four-day numbers available).
