“The Revenant” was in second place with $29.5 million in sales projected by the last screenings tonight.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was finally dethroned from its weeks-long grip atop the North American box office, shoved aside by cop comedy Ride Along 2 and Oscar favourite The Revenant. As the Inquisitr previously reported, the sequel fared better than the first film with special Thursday night showings, bringing in $1.26 million compared to the first’s $1.06 million. Domestically, it has also now become the first movie to cross $850 million with an estimated $851.1 million through Sunday ($856.9 million through the Monday holiday).
Its domestic total stands at $87.7 million and it should pull in $34 million over the holiday.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan & Abrams, features a cast including actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Academy Award victor Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. Its worldwide total is now at $1.86 billion.

In fourth place was Paramount’s military drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi with an estimated $16 million from 2,389 theaters. The film depicts the 2012 terror attack that took place on the USA embassy in Benghazi Libya, that killed J. Christopher Stevens, the US ambassador to Libya, and three other Americans. Off 38%, the comedy hit has earned $129.2 million so far. The animated film about a polar bear who is displaced from his Arctic home and makes his way to New York City, should do $8.8 million worth of business over the four-day span.
