The trailer timing is good: Universal’s N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton about Ice Cube’s iconic rap group drops tomorrow.
The action-comedy sequel reunites Ice Cube’s James with Kevin Hart‘s Ben, who is now a full-fledged cop. Watch the Ride Along 2 trailer after the jump. Striking all the chords of your standard buddy cop movie – over-the-top action and internal quarrelling – Ride Along 2 even features a wink and a nudge toward Universal’s Fast and the Furious franchise, replete with a well-timed cameo of its own.
Ride Along was one of the surprise hits of 2014, making a massive pile of cash in the traditionally slow month of January.
Ride Along 2 brings back the same odd-couple dynamic, but seems to throw more stuff into the mix.
Cube recently spoke with EW on the upcoming project and commented on the chemistry he had with Hart aided in the film’s success.
Cube insists he, Hart and director Tim Story (Think Like a Man, First Sunday) took pains to avoid recycling the situational comedy that made Ride Along in an effort to create of what the rapper-turned-mogul terms a “true action-comedy”. Maybe they’ll pull it off a second.
