Ridley Scott, Adam McKay among Directors Guild nominations
Nevertheless, if the Best Director Oscar field matches with the DGA, it will be no surprise at all – and likely reflect that Spotlight, The Martian, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Big Short are indeed the five biggest contenders left.

The DGA’s slate continues a rather dispiriting guilds run for Todd Haynes’ romance “Carol”, which failed to land nominations with the producers, editors and art directors groups last week. McKay, Tom McCarthy, George Miller and Ridley Scott are among the nominees for the Directors Guild of America announced Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016.
The mysterious fog obscuring this Thursday’s Academy Awards nominations is beginning to clear.
Iñárritu, last year’s DGA victor for “Birdman”, received his fourth DGA nomination in this category for his revenge western “The Revenant”. He went on to win the Oscar and the film won Best Picture.
Since the academy expanded the best picture category in 2009, it has shunned a DGA nominee’s film just once, when Oscar voters snubbed David Fincher’s 2011 sordid psychological thriller “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”.
The guild also instituted a new category, outstanding directorial achievement for a first-time feature film director. Those nominees include Fernando Coimbra (A Wolf at the Door), Joel Edgerton (The Gift), Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) and Laszlo Nemes (Son of Saul).
After the Oscar nominations on January 14, the all important PGA victor will be announced on January 23, followed by SAG on January 30, the DGA on February 6 and the WGA on February 13. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
