Ridley Scott at Star Wars Sydney premiere

The Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park was flooded with fans in various costumes, all out in force to see the latest movie in the franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. JJ Abrams knows how to create great special effects, but nothing can compare to the use of real, dramatic locations like the Irish monastic site.

“The Force Awakens” kicks off with new droid BB-8 in the desert planet Jakku with Resistance fighter Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), who hides a piece of a map, leading to Skywalker, inside BB-8.

The moment of truth has arrived for thousands of Italian Star Wars fans.

It’s been easy to smirk at the nostalgia-laden campaign for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Now, I have the same optimism I had all those years ago as I prepare to welcome Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia back into my life. This is Ford’s best performance in years – he really looks like he’s a guy having fun on the set of a Star Wars movie for the first time since the original Star Wars.

Lucas sold “Star Wars” to Disney in 2012 for $4.05 billion dollars, and “The Force Awakens” is the first of a new trilogy and new standalone films from the studio.

“Risking heresy, it’s worth noting that Abrams actually did smarter, more inventive work on his 2009 reboot of ‘Star Trek, ‘ no doubt in part because he was working with a less heavily guarded enterprise”.

He first wore his costume at a Star Wars convention in the USA in 2010.

The timing is probably right for a new female superhero, now that Jennifer Lawrence has wound up her stint as the archer Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games” movies.

Fortunately, other Star Wars fan groups on Facebook are aware of this group and have warned other fans to avoid members of The Alliance to Preserve the Expanded Universe at all cost.

I also thought there could have been a bit more explanation about the physically imposing Supreme Leader Snoke, performed via motion-capture animation by Andy Serkis.

For the finale, Lupita Nyong’o, Carrie Fisher, and (surprise treat) Harrison Ford joined the rest of the cast to round up the end of the film’s main theme.
