‘Right fit’ trade could help Bruins replace Seidenberg

The Boston Bruins announced on Wednesday that veteran defenseman Dennis Seidenberg would be undergoing a lumbar microdiscectomy on Thursday.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said defenseman Dennis Seidenberg had “zero symptoms” before reporting his ailment to the team medical staff on the Monday before the start of training camp.

Clearly, Zdeno Chara, at 39, brings that by the boatload and Adam McQuaid should be considered a grizzled veteran at this point.

The 34-year-old defender played just 34 games in the 2013-14 season, after being sidelined with a knee injury.

“We’ve felt that we had very good depth, albeit some of it [more] inexperienced”. The Bruins are in need of a puck moving defenseman that can compliment Torey Krug, and it can be argued that the biggest issue Seidenberg faced last season was his ability to drive play. Based on his pedigree and salary (he’s in the second year of a contract that hits the Bruins for $4 million per season under the salary-cap ceiling), Seidenberg was going to be cast in a top-four role again.

Two players that could be provided an opportunity with Boston to start the season are Joe Morrow and Colin Miller.

Colin Miller, newly acquired from Los Angeles, would likely begin his National Hockey League career on the third pairing if he does make the team out of camp. Regardless of Seidenberg’s injury, Trotman said he’s already motivated to earn a spot on the roster. Everyone can play at this level and it’s good to push each other at practice and in games to be the best you can be, leave your impression on the coach and see where it falls. “It’s unfortunate it’s happened, but I’ll move forward with the guys that we have and there are a lot of guys eager to prove that they belong here”.
