Right-hander Dan Haren dealt from Marlins to Cubs for 2 minor leaguers

The addition of starting pitcher Dan Haren and reliever Tommy Hunter appear to be the flawless fit for what the Chicago Cubs are all about in 2015.

Haren is a rental player that the Cubs are praying on to succeed at a high level. “It’s not anything that I ever want to do again”, Michael Hill, Marlins president of baseball operations, said.

“It’s the right core”, Manager Dan Jennings said. However, with Henderson Alvarez out following shoulder surgery and Jarred Cosart sidelined as a result of vertigo, the Marlins will have to rely on their minor league depth: “Some of these guys are going to come back and they’ll get the ball the remainder of the year”. They’ve struggled to find any consistency from their fifth starter this season, and have used Tsuyoshi Wada, Dallas Beeler, Donn Roach, Clayton Richard, and Travis Wood.

The Dodgers immediately designated Morse for assignment, indicating taking on his contract was the price for getting Latos to bolster their rotation in a push for the postseason.

Haren is one of two pitchers, along with Mark Buehrle, to start at least 30 games in each of the past 10 seasons.

So although the Cubs didn’t get the big name or make the blockbuster trade that everyone was hoping for, they did upgrade their team while not giving much in return. He’s 23 years old, and has yet to reach AAA in his five year career. He throws to more contact than he used to, but the infield has improved greatly, so Haren should have a better chance to succeed. According to a report from Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Cubs have acquired relief pitcher Tommy Hunter from the Baltimore Orioles.

Ege, 24, was 6-2 with two saves and a 1.00 ERA in 35 appearances for Rangers’ Class A and Double-A affiliates this season. The 29-year-old right-hander is 44-33 with a 4.28 ERA in eight seasons with Texas and the Orioles. One of those hits was a home run to Junior Lake, who irked Haren and his teammates by showboating as he rounded the bases and sparked a bench-clearing incident.
