Rihanna Performs at the VMAs, Parties with True Love Drake

For her VMA performance as this year’s recipient of the Video Vanguard Award, Rihanna is taking that definition to heart by doing something no artist has done before. “This is a night for us all to be thankful for what you have done for us!”

The Controlla rapper made a decision to confess his love for RiRi with the most adoring speech, telling the huge audience: ‘She’s someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22 years old’. You have affected so many of our lives in the best way possible. Tonight we celebrate you! She hit the notes she was supposed to hit (unlike, say, the Chainsmokers, who earlier performed their hit “Closer”, before Rihanna took the stage to obliterate the memory of them), but she also filled the songs with so much feeling and emotion.

In case you missed this year’s MTV VMAs, you should probably know why everyone’s talking about Rihanna and Drake right now.

“We love the music which could change styles from album to album”.

She then did a dancehall routine for “Rude Boy”, “What’s My Name”, and “Work”. Her vocals are never lacking, even in the midst of her incredible choreography, and now that she’s all about being unapologetically black wherever she goes, it’s even better.

There were a lot of big moments last night at the VMAs, namely all of the #BlackGirlMagic that came courtesy of Rihanna, Teyana Taylor and Beyoncé (though for very different reasons).
