Rihanna, Shonda Rhimes, Clinton appear at Black Girls Rock!

Rihanna focused on the power of being oneself during her acceptance speech at BET’s Black Girls Rock! awards ceremony. “That is it. Just be yourself, it’s the easiest thing you can be”, she said.

Rihanna added, “Tonight is so important to me because I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle…”

Over the weekend, Rihanna was the recipient of the Rock Star award at Black Girls Rock!

The pre-taped award show, which will air on BET network on Tuesday, also featured an unexpected appearance from USA presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who was invited to introduce Black Girls Rock! founder Beverly Bond to the stage.

She gave thanks to her mom and grandmother for being examples of strong black women.

“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda was presented with the Shot Caller Award for dominating America’s Thursday night programming with her hit shows on ABC, while R&B icon Gladys, who performed a medley of her hits, was presented with the Living Legend Award.

Two other standout moments from the evening came from superstars Shonda Rhimes and Rihanna who both shared empowering messages as they accepted awards for their outstanding work.

Tracee Ellis Ross, star of ABC’s “black-ish”, hosted the event and kicked it off with a hilarious and impressive dance number, channeling Rihanna, Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson and her mother, Diana Ross.
