Rihanna to earn Michael Jackson video award at MTV VMAs

The network announced on Thursday that the 28-year-old “Needed Me” singer will be receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the award show’s highest honor, on August 28.

The Good Girl Gone Bad has done well for herself.

“Rihanna’s unparalleled output of hits have spawned some of today’s most memorable music videos from “Umbrella” to ‘We Found Love, ‘ ‘Diamonds” and her most recent collaboration with Drake on ‘Work, ‘ MTV said in a statement.

In the past, the Vanguard Award has gone to Michael Jackson, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and most recently, Kanye West, who took home the award a year ago with a very long acceptance speech.

The Bahamian singer, 28, has already won the video of the year award twice and is the youngest solo artist to score 14 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. The rapper used the pulpit to give a 11-minute rambling speech that ended with him announcing a run for the presidency in 2010.

Once the ceremony starts, however, it’s shaping up to be Beyonce’s show.

MTV announced Thursday that the 28-year-old pop star, who released her first album in 2005, will earn the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the August 28 show in New York City.

Adele and Beyonce received the most nominations overall, with Adele picking up eight and Beyonce 11.

Rihanna will not only perform at the MTV Video Music Awards she’ll be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award
