It’s being reported that as many as nine athletes from across three different sports are under question from Rio police, after they were detained at the event.
The group are accused of tampering with their accreditation in an attempt to get themselves better seats at the basketball semi-final between Australia and Serbia.
The athletes are being accompanied at the police station by Australian Olympic Committee lawyer Fiona de Jong.
Among the athletes was Rugby Sevens captain Ed Jenkins and cyclist Matthew Glaetzer.
Archery’s Alec Potts was also confirmed as one of the athletes.
If the International Olympic Committee decides to revoke the accreditations, the athletes would face immediate deportation.
It is believed that the athletes may have to pay a small fine if they are found to have altered their accreditation.
“The Brazilian authorities and us are working through the issues”.
