Rio 2016: Australian Paralympics squad arrive to heroes’ welcome in Sydney

Athletes in judo, shooting, weightlifting, boccia and other sports who finished their events early in Rio had already returned home on separate flights before the main contingent’s arrival.

Sir Philip Craven, IPC President, said: “As shown with its outstanding coverage of Rio 2016, Channel 4 continues to set the worldwide benchmark for how Paralympic sport should be covered by a broadcaster”.

Another goal was to win medals in competitions that the country had previously never won.

Paralympic wheelchair basketball player Tige Simmons was centre of attention after he gave his partner Rachel Jordan a passionate kiss when they met at Sydney International Airport.

The Team Nigeria Paralympics won a Nigerian-record 8 gold medals at the Rio Paralympic Games alongside two silver and two bronze medals.

The penultimate day of the Rio 2016 Games saw Team SA earn their final three medals, with Dyan Buis emulating fellow South African Wayde van Niekerk by winning gold in the 400m T38 final while setting a new Games record in a time of 49.43 seconds.

The lawmaker said: “Since the 7th Assembly, I have been at the forefront of appreciating our sports men and women whenever they go out and do well”. I was really happy and I couldn’t have asked for anything better, ‘ he said.

Though dropping one spot in the medal table compared to London 2012, from seventh to eighth, Team Brazil, in the Rio 2016 Paralympics, nearly doubled its medal count from four years earlier.

According to the Vanguard, the Reps were pleased with the performance of the Paralympians at the games where they won eight gold medals. With a massive haul of 239 medals, the team achieved the best result ever for the nation at the Games while also topping the medal table for the fourth Paralympics in a row, and fans here were eager to welcome them home. “There are so many countries realising how important Paralympic sport is in their elite sport system so we’re going to have to try to keep ahead of the curve”.
