The sprint was opened up successfully third time round, and despite starting the final lap in third Kenny was able soar past the riders in front down the back straight to sweep round the last bend and claim Gold to the delight of those in the stands, including the emotional Trott, who had watched from the holding zone as the drama unfolded.

“I still feel like that little girl just riding around on a bike, but now I have all these gold medals”, Trott said.

Olympic duo Laura Trott and Jason Kenny have doubled to their haul of gold medals after cycling to success in Rio. “It’s good that no one was taken out of the race, I have a feeling we would have finished in pretty similar placings had they just let us go in the first race”.

On day 11 of the Rio Games cyclist Laura Trott became the most successful British female Olympian in history as she won her fourth gold medal in the Omnium.

She wrote: “Arghhhh! I love him to bits!” I can walk for miles and not see a soul.

Mr Kenny then woke up to a string of tweets praising the 28-year-old Olympian for his success.

Boardman, who won gold in the individual pursuit at the Barcelona Games in 1992, also posted on Twitter, insisting his comments had nothing to do with Laura Trott’s gender.

“Ultimately it was the right decision, it was ridiculously tight and it’s a bit vague, that kind of rule”, said Kenny. Her tally in Rio stands at two golds. “I have a special place in my home for a medal and a saddle”.
