Rio 2016: Delhi Govt announces cash prize for Sakshi, Sindhu

India, which had sent its largest-ever contingent of 119 athletes in the Rio Olympics, ended their campaign at the prestigious quadrennial event with two medals-a silver and a bronze here on Sunday.

While Sindhu who won silver medal in badminton at Rio, will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh, Lalita Babar and Dipa Karmakar will be awarded Rs 15 lakh each.

Sakshi Malik became the obvious choice as India’s only other medallist PV Sindhu, who bagged a silver in women’s singles badminton, left for Hyderabad on Saturday.

Our sportspersons did perform well at the Rio Olympics considering the treatment and infrastructure given to the athletes in India.

He also announced a promotion for Ms Malik’s father, Sukhbir Malik, a bus conductor with the Delhi Transport Corporation.

Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia met Sakshi Malik’s parents and announced Rs one crore award to Sakshi Malik.

“Sakshi opened the medal account for India in Rio and Sindhu added to it”.

Dutt, who endured an injury-plagued season previous year, won a bronze in the 2012 London Olympics through repechage system. “In particular, they stand forth as a splendid example of what women can achieve when they set their minds to it and they are great role models for young women all over India”, she said in a statement here.

Hundreds of people lined the streets and politicians competed to have selfies with the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal.

She has been conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award.
