Rio 2016: Diving training cancelled after pool closed over green water concerns

Olympic divers planning to practice Friday arrived to a closed pool as officials took more time to clean the green-tinged water before reopening the pool less than 3 hours before the start of a competition. Because of this, the pH level of the water was outside of the usual range and caused the discoloration. He added that the pool for water polo and synchronized swimming is being affected in the same way.

FINA conducted tests on the water quality and stressed that the pools do not pose a risk to the health and safety of the athletes.

The 22-year-old diving star said he didn’t know why the pool was green and joked that maybe “Shrek has been in the pool”.

“The alkaline levels went up because we had a far bigger number of athletes, so we didn’t use as many chemicals as we should”, Andrada said, according to Yahoo.

Andrada also noted that the pool would be clear by Wednesday.

In further updates, the worldwide governing body of aquatics, FINA has released a statement saying the colour change will not be harmful to the athletes, despite some sceptical views from water quality experts.

“The algae makes the water look green”. After testing, the Olympic committee announced the water had been tested and determined the color is caused by algae.

By now, you’ve probably heard that the Olympic diving pool has turned a concerning shade of emerald green.

Hungarian water polo player Gergo Zalanki echoed Azevedo’s comments.

“Everyone’s obsessed with the green water”.

Canadian team leader Mitch Geller, whose divers Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito clinched bronze in the 10-meter, told reporters on Tuesday that his athletes “hope it is not like a swamp tomorrow”.
