Rio 2016: Michael Phelps Rules Out Comeback Chances

Ten years ago, Katie Ledecky posed for a photo with Michael Phelps and received an autograph from the legendary American swimmer, who at the time had a paltry – heh – six Olympic gold medals to his name.

However, the favorite for that race has to be Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu, who topped the prelim heats with a time of 2:06.09 and is seeking her fourth gold medal of the Rio Games.

Phelps says he eats less now, though he still acknowledges a breakfast that includes a three-egg omelet, three pieces of French toast and coffee.

“It’s insane. I honestly don’t know when I will”.

After competing in London, Phelps admitted he was no longer “in love” with swimming, but now things are different.

“And it turned out pretty cool”. “I was happy with the way my career ended”. “It’s just a ideal way to finish”.

‘Between now and London, I was so much more emotional during these Games, I think that showed at times on camera, ‘ said Phelps.

He talked of becoming a professional golfer, but eventually found himself testing the waters of a swimming comeback and, despite some missteps with a drink-driving conviction that led to rehabilitation and a suspension, made his fifth Olympic team.

Connor Jaeger gave the USA another silver in the 1,500 free, leaving the American with 33 swimming medals in Rio – matching the highest total since they captured 34 against a depleted field at the boycotted Los Angeles Games of 1984.
