Rio 2016: No furniture for Indian hockey teams in Games village
Once the organisers politely quoted rules and agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with regard to their inability to provide more television and furniture, the Chef de Mission sought the help of the Indian Embassy to meet the requirements. Oltmans, in his letter, had complained that sitting on bean bags will certainly lead to long-term injuries.
“The apartments of the Rio Olympics are not furnished properly”, Oltmans, who is also the High Performance Director of Indian hockey, wrote in his letter.
Rio de Janeiro: In no mood to take their first opponent Ireland lightly, Indian men’s hockey team chief coach Roelant Oltmans said in a mega-event like the Olympics it would be a grave mistake on their part to underestimate any side. “In the staff apartments we’ve managed to bring in some tables”, he added. Actually there are only 2 chairs in each apartment.
“For men and women we are using nine apartments, so there is a lack of 28 chairs and for seven apartments we need at least one table as well”.
“During the Olympics we would like to give our players the possibility to watch the matches of our competitors live on TV. They have had a decent run in the tournament in the United States of America where we won a couple of games and will hope to convert the confidence from there into good result in the opening tie”, said Hawgood. But India’s Chef de Mission Rakesh Gupta didn’t reply to his complaints.
“I also inquired about the cable connection for TV sets on each floor and was told they would check if apartments can receive cabling”.
He also asked the Chef de Mission for the permission to purchase three more TV sets so that the players could regularly follow and analyse each game. “So we need permission to purchase chairs from the outside market to avoid injuries during the Olympics”.
Gupta spoke to and also wrote to the Organising Committee about the requests, and even tried to purchase them from Rate Card of the OC but found they were not available.
