Phelps now has 25 medals in all, and three more races in Rio to add to his nearly unimaginable total.

The American crushed fierce rival Chad le Clos to regain his 200 meters butterfly title in a dust-up bristling with tension, celebrating by pointing to the sky and gesturing to the Rio crowd to “bring the noise” – an order they duly obeyed.

The sisters already have teamed up to lead Australia to a gold medal in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

He then raised his arms to salute the crowd as fiancee Nicole cradled their baby son Boomer in the stands. “Hopefully I can keep it rolling one last time”.

The Olympics came to an end for another US backstroke champion.

“There wasn’t a shot in hell I was losing that race”, he added. “And if I did I was leaving everything in the pool”.

USA’s Michael Phelps won the men’s 200m individual medley, beating Japan’s Kosuke Hagino and China’s Wang Shun. Lochte, who grew up in Daytona Beach, colored his hair with the intention of achieving a blue tint in celebration of his fourth Olympics, but it came out silver, making him look 20 years older, and has now taken on a Brazilian green shade because of the chlorine in the water.

The bronze went to Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi in 1:53.62, just ahead of the fading le Clos. The 200 IM is one of two races that Phelps can win for the fourth straight time, along with the still-to-come 100 butterfly.

Phelps said: “My body hurt a little bit” but he should be good to go for the evening semifinals. “To have three golds, it’s unreal”. Siobhan-Marie O’Connor of Britain challenged Hosszu all the way but had to settle for silver.

Phelps clocked one minute, 54.66 for a comfortable winning margin of 1.95 seconds.

Elsewhere, New Zealand’s rugby hopes took a blow when superstar Sonny Bill Williams suffered a tournament-ending injury in its shock 14-12 opening defeat to Japan. Bronte is the reigning world champion, but Cate is the world-record holder.

Gold medals he has won at five Olympics. It was Russia’s second gold in judo at the Games. Trstenjak beat second-seeded Clarisse Agbegnenou of France.
