Rio 2016 Olympics: Michael Phelps will be Team USA flag bearer
For more than a year, critics of the Rio Games have cited the city’s polluted waters, economic decline and lagging construction efforts. Many of these small nations have never won a medal, but are Olympians all the same.

Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles and award-winning filmmaker Andrucha Waddington, part of the creative team directing the opening ceremonies, suggested that the show will steer away from cliches, do away with “high-tech” and honor Brazil’s roots, per the Associated Press (h/t CBC.ca). Check out the Rio Olympics TV schedule at the end of this article. After much noise, controversy, and fears, Rio de Janeiro has finally come to life and totally prepared for the grand Olympics Opening Ceremony.
The 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony is at 7 PM Eastern / 4 PM Pacific on Friday August 5th.
Many of Phelps’ teammates think he is the ideal choice for carrying the flag. He said he was happy to work with a low budget because it made more sense for Brazil as a country. Things have settled in the last two years more than they ever have been.
And yet the show is set to go on Friday evening at the Maracana soccer stadium. Some details have leaked through social media, but the organizers are trying hard to keep a lid on the ceremony details.
What’s going to happen in the opening ceremony? The objective is to showcase Brazil as it is, showing both the good and bad parts.
When and where are the Olympics being held this year?
The people who watch the Olympics are not particularly sports fans.
Sure, there’ll be plenty of colorful, costumed shimmying, and uptempo samba, bossa nova and Tropicália rhythms, some performed by legends Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil.
They include familiar faces such as Bethesda native Katie Ledecky, already the best female swimmer in the world at age 19, and Carmelo Anthony, who was raised in Baltimore and is seeking his third gold medal in men’s basketball. Deborah Colker (Brazil’s most famous choreographer) will prepare nearly 6,000 dancers to perform at the ceremony. Brazilian supermodel Leandra Medeiros Cerezo, known professionally as Lea T, will be the first transgender person to participate in the ceremony, thus displaying the theme of inclusion proudly, worldwide.
NBC executives have given vague statements about the reason for the tape delay, ranging from cultural context to the demographics of Olympics viewers. It is on August 5, 2016. It will be the first time in five Olympic appearances he will march in the opening.
