Rio 2016: Phelps claims 22nd Olympic gold after 200m individual medley triumph
In their 18th meeting at a major national or worldwide competition, MIchael Phelps notched another Olympic gold in the 200 meter individual medley while Ryan Lochte failed to medal in the race in Rio. “Ryan Lochte, going for his 13th career medal, saving the best for last”, exclaimed CBC’s Elliotte Friedman, as Phelps, not his American teammate, thundered down the final 50 meters.

One of the worst nightmares for any announcer is misidentifying key players at a sporting event and getting a game-winning, championship-winning, or gold medal-winning call dead wrong.
The Singaporean was always in control and won by 0.75 seconds from the trio of Phelps, South Africa’s Chad Le Clos and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh.
Lochte, who seemed to wilt under the pressure down the stretch, finished in fifth.
The previous record holder was Leonidas, who competed in four different Olympics and won his medals in track. Lochte thinking that he’d be the most decorated Olympian ever if the actual most successful Olympic athlete, Phelps, had never been born, does have some merit.
Considering all the jaw-dropping moments he’s manufactured this week and how he’s two races away from an all-gold, six-medal haul at these Games, it makes sense to at least wonder.
Phelps clocked 1 minute, 54.66 for a comfortable winning margin of 1.95 seconds over 400 IM champion Kosuke Hagino of Japan.
Phelps wasn’t the lone American to win gold Thursday.
“We do have a very young team, so anything I can teach them on my last couple of days as a United States swimmer, I’m proud to do”.
Elliote Friedman had a nightmare calling the 200m medley final, which saw Phelps win his 22nd Olympic gold medal. “But I definitely recognize him, and I recognize the journey from, you know, from the start of it when Bob and I first started back when I was 11 years old”. Phelps had previously said that the 2012 London Olympics would be his last, but he came out of retirement in 2014 and went on to easily secure a spot on Team USA once again.
“I just don’t see it happening”, Bowman said.
This time, she was limited to a single gold, which came for swimming the preliminaries of the 4×200 freestyle relay. Talking with him, he’s one of the rookies I’m very close with.
