Rio 2016: Phelps insists defeat to Le Clos was never an option
Following another gold medal performance as part of the men’s 4X200-meter freestyle relay, Phelps explained why he went from tears to laughter on the podium.

With the victory, Phelps’ avenged his mere silver in London after winning the 200 butterfly at both the 2004 Athens Games and 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 10: Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in the history entered the record books twice in a day as he bagged two consecutive gold medals within a span of 70 minutes. It came on a night that American teammate Katie Ledecky picked up her second gold of the Rio Olympics on the way to what could be a historic run of her own in the pool.
Phelps posted a time of 1 minute 53.36 seconds, which was enough to hold off Masato Sakai of Japan, whose 1:53.40 was 0.04 seconds behind Phelps.
The camera showed le Clos boxing and bouncing around while warming up.
Lochte, a long time rival and friend of Phelps, lent his expertise to the squad, helping the team in the qualifying round and serving as the veteran in an otherwise rookie lineup. With three gold medals already under his belt in Rio and three events remaining, the 31-year-old looks like he’s well on his way to finishing his Olympic career on quite a high note.
In fact, Britain’s men’s hockey team kicked off the tournament with a 9-1 win against host nation Brazil – and towards the end of the game the coach made a decision to remove the goalkeeper and play with 11 outfield players!
She’s 2/3’s of the way to becoming the first woman to sweep the 200-, 400- and 800-meter Freestyles since 1968.
“That hurt pretty badly”, she told reporters after the race. The U.S., which took gold in the 4×100-meter free, holds the world and Olympic records in the 200.
Within an 80-minute timeframe and just ten minutes after receiving his 20th gold medal, Phelps anchored the usa 4x200m squad, as his team cruised to victory by 2.47 seconds ahead of Great Britain.
He returned to the pool for the men’s 4×200 meter freestyle relay to ensure another gold medal ahead of Great Britain and Japan in a thrilling finale.
“It’s the closest I’ve come to throwing up at the end of a race. It was a frustrating race for me and it’s good for the sport to be able to have a competitor like that”.
